The Institute of Mediterranean and Oriental Cultures of the Polish Academy of Sciences is a leading institution in the field of the archaeology of Egypt, especially for research connected to pottery studies, which deals with material from various regions and cultures (pottery locally produced in Egypt and imports from Sudan, Cyprus, the Mediterranean and the Asian area). The Institute has conducted and still conducts important archaeological missions in Egypt, Sudan, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Cyprus where the component of pottery studies within a broader cultural context is always present. The Institute has established from many years strong and durable relationship with prestigious scientific institutions all over the world, e.g. the German Archaeological Institute (Cairo, DAIK), the French Institute of oriental archaeology (Cairo, Ifao), various universities (e.g. Berlin , Mainz, Heidelberg, Khartum) and museums (e.g. British Museum, Royal Ontario Museum). Many scientific projects financed by the NCN (Foundation for Polish Science) and by other agencies, have been and will be carried out at the institute, such as those directed by Prof. Karol Myśliwiec, Prof. Bogdan Żurawski, Dr hab. Teodozja Rzeuska, Dr Henryk Meyza, Dr Edyta Marzec, Dr Massimiliano Nuzzolo, Dr Zuzanna Wygnańska and Dr Christiana Tsouparopulu and Dr Maria Carmela Gatto.
